The big shots of the e-commerce world are catching on to the concept of Group Buying. Groupon recently announced its acquisition of SoSasta, one of the many Group Buying website portals in India. Sosasta however is presently not the forerunner in the market and it is relatively small in comparison to SnapDeal and BuzzinTown (Source: Livemint.com and Moneymint.in). The acquisition was apparently targeted more towards talent acquisition than anything else (former employees of Google). Funnily, the domain Groupon.in is not owned by Groupon, but another website that also provides Group Buying deals, namely Groupoff. So, we hear through the grapevine (mashable) that being rejected by Groupon creates a little fire in Google’s belly. Google was rejected by Groupon for its $6 billion takeover bid. Scorned, Google has decided to take on Groupon with its own Groupon/LivingSocial clone with “Google Offers”! Google Offers is slated to bring about 24-hour deals that become valid only once the ‘tipping point’ in the number of customers (decided by the firm offering the deal), is reached.
